Stand Like Men: Why the Church Needs Courageous Faith Today

By Dr Timothy Mann

1 Corinthians 16:13–14

There are moments in history when the church needs to recalibrate—not by inventing something new, but by returning to something ancient. This is one of those moments. In a culture where masculinity is confused, conviction is rare, and spiritual apathy is common, the Apostle Paul’s words to the church in Corinth strike with timely force:

“Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong. Let all that you do be done with love.” (1 Cor. 16:13–14, NKJV)

Five commands. Short. Sharp. Urgent.
And together, they form a clear call: stand like men.

This is not a call to cultural bravado or chest-thumping machismo. It’s a call to mature, Christlike manhood—a call for men to rise, lead, protect, serve, and love as Jesus did.

Why This Matters Now

Corinth was a morally chaotic city. The church there was surrounded—and sometimes swayed—by temptation, compromise, and doctrinal confusion. Sound familiar?

Today’s church is no different. We’re bombarded by pressure to conform, to soften, to retreat. Manhood is either vilified or caricatured. But Scripture gives us a better way. Not to abandon manhood—but to redeem it.

Paul’s five imperatives aren’t optional advice. They’re military commands. And they aren’t just for the “manly men” or the seminary-trained. These are orders for the whole church—but with a special weight for men.

Why? Because the church doesn’t need more gimmicks or programs. It needs men of God.

What Does It Mean to “Stand Like Men”?

The heart of Paul’s charge lies in that third command: “be brave.” But in the original Greek, the phrase literally means “act like men.” That’s not a dig at women. It’s a call to maturity and courage rooted in Biblical manhood.

Here’s the breakdown:

  • Watch – Be spiritually alert, like a soldier on guard duty.
  • Stand fast in the faith – Be unmovable in gospel truth.
  • Be brave – Act like a man. Show courage. Take responsibility.
  • Be strong – Not self-powered, but God-empowered strength.
  • Let all that you do be done in love – Let love shape everything.

These aren’t disconnected tasks. They’re a portrait of what godly maturity looks like—especially for men.

Biblical Manhood Isn’t Toxic—It’s Transforming

Culture may tell you that manhood is the problem. Scripture tells us that manhood, when shaped by Christ, is part of the solution.

Jesus—the ultimate man—was never passive, never arrogant. He was courageous, sacrificial, bold, and tender. He stood for truth, faced down evil, protected the vulnerable, and laid down His life in love.

That’s the model. That’s the call.

The church needs men who:

  • Stay spiritually awake.
  • Refuse to compromise Biblical convictions.
  • Lead their homes in humility and courage.
  • Find strength not in themselves but in the Lord.
  • Do everything—not some things—in love.

The Stakes Are Eternal

This isn’t about ego. This is about eternity. Your family, your church, and your legacy are at stake.

  • A sleeping man can’t lead a spiritual battle.
  • A wavering man can’t hold gospel ground.
  • A timid man can’t rise when the moment calls.
  • A loveless man may do good—but won’t reflect Christ.

So watch. Stand fast. Be brave. Be strong. And above all, love.

This series will walk through each of these five imperatives in detail. We’ll see how they shape Biblical manhood, cultivate Godly maturity, and reflect the heart of Jesus. And we’ll discover how every Christian—especially every man—is called to stand like men.

Reflection & Application

  • Where have you felt cultural pressure to compromise your faith or your manhood?
  • What does it look like for you to “act like a man” in your current season of life—whether at home, in church, or in the workplace?
  • Are there areas where spiritual sleep has crept in? Where is God calling you to wake up?
